“Equally the Government should be giving some serious and urgent thought as to what financial concessions could be offered to country pubs so that we can prevent any more of these great rural institutions from calling last orders for the last time. “But if any local communities become aware that their pubs are struggling then they should get together to see how landlords can be better supported - such as by organising more community events on the premises rather than in, say, the village hall. I know many landlords have diversified to bring in new income streams while others have cut and reorganised their opening hours so that when they are open they are busy. But I would like to think the nucleus of country pubs that remain can be saved. As the stretches are given your Flexologist will ask you where you are on an intensity scale (your own scale) of 1-10. Your Flexologist will be constantly checking in with you on your comfort level and will adjust the stretch to your comfort. “We have to accept that there are currently too many pubs for the demand. You will feel tension during your stretch, but not pain. If they can’t afford to use the pubs now they can’t be forced back through the doors. “This isn’t simply a case of telling people to use it or lose it. “But we are also looking at the double-edged sword of the cost of living crisis: the more pubs have had to raise their prices in an effort to manage rising overheads the more they have become an unaffordable option for thousands of families facing higher - and unavoidable - energy and mortgage costs. “Partly the problem can be traced back to the pandemic when people discovered how much cheaper it was to drink at home - and have never gone back to routinely visiting a pub. “Obviously the owners had been hanging on in the hope that an upsurge in summer trade would get them out of difficulty but the fact that that has not happened merely illustrates the depth of the crisis now engulfing the pub sector,” he said. Mr Liddell-Grainger said the fact that both had disappeared from the local food and drink map at the peak of the holiday season was a disturbing development. Another pub in Bampton, The White Horse, also announced its closure recently. He was speaking after two pubs in the Exmoor area pulled down the shutters in the space of a week.ĭulverton’s Bridge Inn has been forced to close after trading on the site for hundreds of years while in nearby Bampton the award-winning Swan has followed, its owners citing unaffordable increased running costs. Ian Liddell-Grainger says local communities should consider ways of maximising the use of failing pubs while ministers needed to consider what special help could be offered. More country pubs and inns will be forced to close their doors unless ways can be found to support them, an MP has warned.
